The Mt. Shasta Snow Trip

For vintage car enthusiasts, rallies are one of the most engaging ways to enjoy your vehicle. Most people are familiar with the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where vintage car collectors and enthusiasts from around the world gather in Monterey, California to appreciate the most rare and historic vehicles in existence. Major events focus on the accurate preservation and restoration of these vehicles, with debates between judges regarding the accuracy of the spark plugs used.

Then there is the Mt. Shasta Snow Trip; a 5-day rally from the Sacramento area to the base of Mt. Shasta. Drivers and their co-drivers push their pre-1967 Volkswagen buses to their absolute limit. The Shasta Snow trip is a test of an owner’s mechanical and driving skill as well as their preparedness. This crowd is less impressed with the “period-correctness” of these vintage vans, but more their durability and practicality for the rally.

The trip takes place every February, during the peak of winter in the region. The trails are muddy and the temperatures are cold.
